Majority of fans were” Causing a Commotion“, who each acted like paparazzi that consistently following their queens in every events, they also consider the coronation night as a “Holiday” of supremacy, wherein they would pray like an “Angel“, who wish that their personal favorites, who all came from different “La Isla Bonita” will be guided by a huge “Lucky Star” that would serve as their queens guiding light in fulfilling their sole dream. Moreover, if you were an avid follower of this pageant, you would definitely agree that the interview round in this era had certainly taught you how to “Express Yourself” with genuine thoughts, “Open Your Heart” to your non-believers, “Dress You Up” with confidence, let your “Burning Up” desires steer you to reach your dreams and “Cherish” every wonderful moments while you are in the competition, in able to get “Into The Groove“, if you are completely engulfed by anxiety or intimidated by the presence of other delegates. The 1980s era was the period when the yuppie lifestyle was introduced. The term yuppie was coined by Joseph Epstein in 1982. which generally means an independent professional, who not only engages himself into a sophisticated job but also well-updated in new stuff. This was also the period when musically-inclined wenches dominated the music industry, with the likes of Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Tiffany,Debbie Gibson and Cindy Lauper, who also set bizaare trends in the 80s. In Miss Universe, the pageant was also dominated by yuppie contestants and winners, as those batch of candidates and winners showcased their eloquence, gender-strength, elegance and fashion style in the society.

As I pay tribute to the not so distant past of 80s era and in celebration of the Queen of Pop’s birthday, allow me to present to you another blast from the past Miss Universe topic with a blend of Madonna’s 80s music genre. Obviously, there is no doubt that the 80s era was dominated by the Queen of Pop.Truth to be told,, Madonna will always be remembered not only as a pop diva but also as the universal gay icon of the world.

In my latest Miss Universe article, I chose 10 songs from the Queen of Pop, which made gigantic waves in the 80s, then melded to my personal assessment on each of the Misses Universe 1980-1989 titleholders.

Misses USA-Julie Hayek and Ireland-Roberta Brown were among the crowd favorite during that time.

On the night of the pageant 12 countries were called, and they are Misses Spain, Norway, Finland, Italy, Singapore, Venezuela, Germany, England, Switzerland,Ireland, USA and New Zealand. As the competition went on, Miss New Zealand was consistently impressing the judges with her enigmatic beauty. It was a race of ranking scores, as each of the semi-finalists’ scores were equaly close in margin. In the final decision of the judges, five countries emerged: Miss England-Karen Moore was 4th, Miss Switzerland-Lolita Morena was 3rd, Miss Ireland-Roberta Brown was 2nd, Miss United States-Julie Hayek was 1st runner-up and Miss Universe 1983 was New Zealand-Lorraine Elizabeth Downes.

Knight Convention Center in Miami, Florida, USA on July 9, 1984, the pageant returned to celebrate the joy of beauty in MIami, Florida, 13 years after it hosted the said pageant. There were 81 lovely aspirants participated in this edition. Miss Colombia-Susana Caldas , who was gaining weight during that time, was one of the crowd favorites, along with Miss Sweden-Yvonne Ryding, Miss Venezuela-Carmen María Montiel and Miss Philippines-Desiree Verdadero.

After the one on one interview Miss Colombia who wanted to be an Architect, was ranked one in the interview followed by Venezuela, South Africa,Sweden and surprisingly Philippines, whom I think didn’t ace the interview, for she was struggling but was able to conceal her poor communication skills by being jovial. In the swimsuit competition Sweden was ranked 1st place followed by Venezuela, Philippines and Germany both tied with their score and Thailand was in 5th place. In the evening gown competition Sweden led the race followed by Venezuela, Philippines, Colombia and South Africa. The moment had arrived and the result were announced: Miss Colombia was 4th, Philippines was 3rd, Venezuela was 2nd, South Africa was 1st and Miss Sweden, Yvonne Ryding was Miss Universe 1984.

Yvonne Ryding shared the same fate with Shawn Weatherly(Miss Universe 1992), both queens aced all rounds in their respective pageant night. Yvonne Ryding wasn’t expecting to win, for she believed that she was nothing compared to the Latin American delegates who were all prepared in all aspects. Miss Sweden was perhaps drifted by her luck beyond the edge of “Borderline” of triumph, which propelled her all the way to the Miss Universe crown.

The 34th Miss Universe was held once again at James L. Knight Convention Center, Miami, USA on July 15, 1985. Where 79 beautiful contestants competed. In this 34th edition, only 10 countries were selected to be part of the semi-final round. Miss Spain-Teresa López was the ultimate favorite by the pageant followers, majority of whom believed that Miss Spain “had the victory” in her bag in that year, This was also the year of Mother Teresa noble retorts, from the candidates who advanced in the top 5 final list, as each of them was promoting love and peace in their response.

The 10 semi-finalists were comprised of: Misses Brazil,USA, Chile, Canada,Ireland,Uruguay, Venezuela, Spain and Puerto Rico. Miss USA-Laura Harring was the first latina who represented Texas and eventually won the Miss USA 1985 title, she was born in Mexico. Miss Spain led in two rounds(swimsuit and interview), however she stumbled five-places down in the evening gown round, where she was ranked 6th place. Miss Zaire-Kayonga Mureka was the only black delegate in the circle of 10 semi-finalists, who was consistently sweeping away the blondes in the top 3 rankings. The evening gown was dominantly invaded by the Puerto Rican goddess Deborah Carthy-Deu, who looked stunningly sultry with her revealing gown, which revealed her oozing curves. The final set of winners in that night were: Uruguay-Andrea López was 4th, Venezuela-Silvia Martínez was 3rd, Zaire-Kayonga Mureka was 2nd, Spain-Teresa López was 1st runner-up and Miss Universe 1985 was Puerto Rico-Deborah Carthy-Deu. Sadly, for most pageant fans the result was a big upset, for they were expecting that Miss Spain would win that night.

Deborah Carthy-Deu was considered as the silent assassin that evening, as no one expected that she would drastically bloomed throughout the pageant night, besides Deborah was seemingly anchored by her elegance and sultriness, which apparently brought her all the way to the top.

Deborah who was a ballerina, was born in San Juan Puerto Rico. She was passionately inclined into dancing and acting during her younger days. Deborah currently owns a modelling school, which helps those young ladies who aspire of becoming models, actresses and beauty queens. She could really “Dress You Up” and unleash your inner drive in performing arts, which would propel your dreams toward in entertainment industry.

The Miss Universe in 1980s was one of the most memorable era of this pageant in more than six decades of its existence. The pageant craze of this decade was raged by ridiculous trends. This was the period where blondes with Farrah Fawcett various hairstyles were not only dominating the semi-final round but also most winners resembles Farrah’s aura, moreover,it was the year when flips and turns while prancing in swimsuit competition was too impossible to be seen, as fierce catwalks during that epoch was not relevant. Another thing, most candidates who made it into the finals were very candid with their rejoinders in the interview, it was also the era of tacky fashion statements, as hideous shining gowns made of lame and satin fabrics were also flowing like hot lava in the evening gown round and finally the Madonna inspired thick makeups and eyebrows never went out of style in the pageant during the 80s. Overall the ten years of Miss Universe in the 80s decade was filled with fun, bitches, rowdy followers, shortcomings and never ending saga of controversies. Furthermore, if there was one person who made Miss Universe an exciting and addictive annual event, well definitely its Mr. Bob Barker. Thank you for reading!
